What you Need to Connect Rain Gun Sprinklers

For proper rain gun sprinkler installation, you need;

  • Mainline HDPE pipes
  • Sub-mainline pipes (HDPE or PVC)
  • Water Pump (1-2 Hp)
  • Elbow HDPE
  • Tee HDPE
  • Female and Male Adapters
  • Water Filter
  • Ball Corks
  • Rain Gun Sprinkler Head
  • IPS delivery pipes

How to Install Rain Guns

Installation of rain guns should ensure that pressure is constant in the entire connection from start to end. Therefore, it is ideal to use same pipe size and fittings from the water source to the sprinkler head.
Water Pump to use is mounted on a flat area near the water source and connected to the mainline HDPE pipe.
Pipe branches will require same Tee or elbow fittings for corners. On the ends of pipes you fit end caps and use a tee fitting to connect a riser IPS to mainline supply pipe.
IPS delivery pipe connects to the sprinkler head to complete the system.

Rain Gun Sprinkler Count Requirement Per Acre

An acre of land can use at least 3 rain gun sprinklers.

Where to Use Rain Gun Sprinklers

Rain Guns are best for flat lands and areas with less slopy surfaces. Due to the high pressure and heavy flow rates it can lead to erosion. It is then a good idea to use it on lands with good drainage and flat topography.

Which Soil Surfaces is Good for Rain Guns?

Rain Gun Sprinklers are recommended on soil loam or loose soils with good drainage and retention properties.

How Rain Guns Operate

Sprinklers and rain Guns deliver higher flow rates compared to other methods of irrigation systems. They water crops in an overhead manner which is not ideally good to use on some crops such as tomatoes.

Rain Gun Sprinklers: Plant Recommendation

Due to its upright positioning and installation at a tall height, it is good for tall crops such as maize, sugarcane, and bananas.
In addition, rain guns are good for pastures; lucerne, Napier; cotton, tea, coffee, cocoa, barley, rice, and fruits.

How to Choose Rain Gun Sprinklers

Before deciding on which rain gun sprinkler to choose, you should consider.
Crops to grow: If you are growing tall and high water requirement crops, then you need a rain gun.
Pressure rate: In case you have a water pump already, consider the rain gun sprinkler with working pressure that is within the pump’s range.
Farm size: To consider the size and number of rain guns, you need to know your farm dimensions.
Water Availability: Rain guns use a lot of water; ensure you have enough water before making a decision to use them.
Cost : Above all other factors, the budget you have will decide which rain gun sprinkler you buy.

Tips for Effective Irrigation Use of Rain Guns
